DIY Jar Hacks with Bonne Maman
From the pantry to room decor, Bonne Maman’s iconic 13oz glass jars have a second life well beyond their last spoonful of preserves. Crafted from sturdy, high-quality glass with a timeless silhouette, these jars are made to last and are endlessly versatile, whether styled on a windowsill, shelf, or tabletop. It’s no surprise that home cooks and DIY enthusiasts choose to repurpose them, transforming something familiar into something beautifully functional. Here are just a couple ways you can repurpose your Bonne Maman glass jars:
AS A PLANT POT
Perfect for smaller water & soil-friendly plants such as Pothos, Spider Plants, Coleus, Dracaena Fragrans, or Philodendron.
Remove Excess Soil: Take the plant out of its container and gently shake off or massage the roots to remove loose soil.
Rinse the Roots: Fill a bowl with cool water and submerge the roots, gently massaging them to remove any remaining soil. Change the water if needed until the roots are clean. Some brown coloration is normal.
Trim if Necessary: If the roots are too long for your jar, carefully trim them with sharp scissors to fit inside.
Place in the Jar: Fill your Bonne Maman jar with fresh, cool tap water. Gently place the plant inside, ensuring the roots are fully submerged while the leaves rest around the jar’s opening.
Maintain & Watch It Grow: Refresh the water as needed, at least every 4 weeks, to keep it clean and support healthy growth. Enjoy your new upcycled plant jar!

AS A POTPOURRI JAR
Prepare an assortment of fragrant, dried natural plant materials of your choosing. You may also prepare an essential oil for extra fragrance and a bow for decoration.
- Select an assortment of fragrant, dried natural plant materials, such as whole herbs and spices. For our potpourri, we used rosemary sprigs, cedar boughs, dried orange slices, star anise, and cinnamon sticks.
- If you would like your potpourri to be exceptionally fragrant, you can place it in a container and add eto it before sealing it up for 24 hours. A light tumble or missential oil x will ensure that the essential oil is evenly distributed.
- Transfer your potpourri into an empty Bonne Maman jar, and be sure to arrange the ingredients in whatever way is most aesthetically pleasing to you.
- Lastly, you can simply display the jar as is, or you can decorate it with a beautiful bow!

MINI JAR PLACECARD HOLDER
A perfect application for Bonne Maman’s 1oz mini jars. For this project, prepare a harp-style table card holder, an adhesive or hot glue gun, place cards, and any themed decorations you’d like to include in the jar.
- Separate lids from mini jars and attach the card holders to the lid of the Bonne Maman jar using a strong adhesive or hot glue gun.
- Insert small decorations into the jars. We used holly berries, but you could use mistletoe, very small ornaments, pine clippings, etc. Anything that would look cute encased in a jar!
- Screw the lid with attached clip onto the jar, fill out a place card, and place it into the clip.

AS A PIN CUSHION
It’s very easy for the family sewing box to become muddled. Bonne Maman’s handy jars make it much simpler to organize all the bits and bobs in an efficient and attractive way. Cotton reels, buttons, needles, tape measure, pieces of fabric and ribbon can all be tidied away and easily found.
- Use a spare piece of your favorite material to make a colorful pin cushion to stick onto the lid of a jar to make it both functional, and eye-catching at the same time!
